Applications
The Hughes FM Data Detector was designed as part of the ground receive chain for Westar, the first US domestic geosynchronous communications satellite system operated by Western Union, which launched beginning in 1974. Hughes Aircraft's Satellite Ground Equipment Division produced complete ground station equipment sets to support the receive and telemetry processing functions at earth stations communicating with the Westar satellite fleet. An FM Data Detector of this type demodulates the frequency-modulated composite telemetry signal downlinked from the satellite, recovering the baseband data stream for further processing and monitoring. The nutation channel — with its adjustable offset, gain, and Nutation/Earth mode selection — supports processing of nutation sensor signals used to monitor and control the attitude of spin-stabilized satellites. This type of ground station instrument was used by satellite operators and earth station engineers responsible for tracking satellite health and telemetry during the 1970s and 1980s, the era of early commercial domestic satellite communications in North America.
