Applications
Uni-Solar (United Solar Ovonic) produced amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells on flexible stainless steel substrates starting in the 1980s, and these cells became a staple of both commercial roofing-integrated solar products and DIY photovoltaic projects. Unlike rigid crystalline silicon wafers, the stainless steel substrate makes these cells bendable, lightweight, and durable in situations where a rigid panel isn't practical — common uses include curved surface mounting, portable charging setups, small off-grid systems, and electronics experimentation.
