The Yamashita Denso PXS-0855MP is a large-format solar panel I-V flash tester (solar simulator) built to measure the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of amorphous thin-film and polysilicon solar panels up to 18 feet (approximately 6000mm) in length. The system was designed specifically by Yamashita Denso (YDC) for Unisolar to test their PVL and ePVL series flexible amorphous a-Si solar laminates, but is also capable of testing standard-size crystalline silicon solar modules. It consists of three integrated 2000mm x 900mm flash tester sections that combine to form a single continuous 6000mm x 900mm test bed, allowing simultaneous or individual testing of up to two long-format panels side by side.

Applications

Solar panel I-V flash testers are the standard production-line and R&D instrument used to characterize the electrical output of photovoltaic modules under simulated standard test conditions (STC: 1000 W/m², AM1.5, 25°C). A Xenon flash lamp fires a brief, intense pulse of light over the panel surface while the system simultaneously sweeps voltage and records current, producing the I-V curve from which key parameters — Voc, Isc, Pmax, fill factor, and conversion efficiency — are derived. Large-format flash testers like the PXS-0855MP were purpose-built for the thin-film and flexible laminate solar market that grew rapidly in the late 2000s, particularly for Unisolar's building-integrated PVL laminates that bonded directly to standing-seam metal roofs and could not be tested on standard module-sized testers. The ability to test panels up to 18–19 feet long in a single pass — or two panels simultaneously — made this class of system essential in high-throughput manufacturing environments.
