Applications
Float-zone silicon wafers are produced by a zone-melting process that yields exceptionally high purity and very low concentrations of oxygen and carbon compared to standard Czochralski (CZ) wafers. This makes FZ wafers the preferred substrate for applications where carrier lifetime, minority carrier diffusion length, and precise resistivity control are critical. High-resistivity N-type FZ wafers in the (111) orientation are commonly used in power device fabrication — including high-voltage diodes, thyristors, and IGBTs — as well as in radiation detector development, neutron transmutation doping (NTD), solar cell research, and advanced MEMS structures. The 100mm diameter was the dominant wafer size in semiconductor fabs through the 1980s and 1990s, and 100mm FZ substrates remain in active use today in research institutions, university labs, national labs, and specialized device manufacturers that maintain 4-inch process lines. Researchers working in silicon photonics, particle physics detectors, and nuclear instrumentation also regularly specify high-resistivity FZ silicon for its superior bulk electrical properties.
These Siltronic 100mm FZ polished silicon wafers were ordered by a small semiconductor lab that closed operations over ten years ago. The wafers were never used and have been sitting in storage since that time. They remain in their original plastic carriers with Siltronic lot labels intact and QC acceptance stickers visible.
