Description
Oriel Corporation 7081 Pyroelectric Detector System 110V Benchtop
The Oriel Corporation 7081 is a benchtop pyroelectric detector system designed to measure the power and energy of laser and other optical radiation sources. It conditions and displays the signal from a connected pyroelectric detector head, providing a calibrated readout of optical power across a selectable range of multiplier settings. Manufactured in August 1985 by Oriel Corporation of America in Stratford, Connecticut, this is a classic instrument from the era when pyroelectric detection was the standard method for broadband laser power measurement in research and industrial optical labs.

Applications
Pyroelectric detector systems like the Oriel 7081 are used in optical and photonics laboratories to measure the power or energy output of lasers, lamps, and other broadband radiation sources across a wide spectral range — from UV through far-infrared. The pyroelectric sensing element responds to changes in incident radiation, making these instruments particularly well suited for pulsed laser energy measurement as well as CW laser power when modulated. The 7081 serves as the signal-conditioning and display unit, pairing with a separate Oriel pyroelectric detector head that connects via the rear panel. It was a standard tool in laser labs, spectroscopy setups, and optical engineering environments during the 1980s and into the 1990s. Today, instruments of this type remain useful in legacy optical test benches, university labs, and research facilities that maintain older Oriel detector heads and need a compatible readout unit.
This Oriel Corporation 7081 Pyroelectric Detector System has been powered and tested at our facility. The unit powers on, the display works, and we confirmed the zero-adjust function using the front-panel knob. It was not tested beyond that. Note: the black knob on the right side of the front panel is missing. Otherwise the unit is in good used condition with typical wear consistent with its age.
