Applications

The General Instrument Magnitude series was a widely deployed platform in cable television and broadcast headend facilities during the mid-to-late 1990s. MPEG multiplexers in this family combine individual MPEG-2 encoded program streams — from encoders, satellite receivers, or storage servers — into a single MPEG-2 transport stream (MPTS) for downstream modulation and distribution over cable or broadcast RF infrastructure. The Application Bus ports on the rear connect directly to Magnitude encoders and other GI Magnitude system components, allowing centralized multiplexing within a GI headend rack. The black burst input provides house sync reference, and the modem and supervisory ports support remote monitoring and control typical of professional headend environments. This platform was a core part of GI's digital cable headend solution before the transition to IP-based transport and remains sought after for legacy cable system maintenance and spares.
