Applications

3M UBF-510-F is used as the front sheet (top layer) in flexible thin-film photovoltaic modules, where glass is not suitable due to weight or flexibility constraints. In a typical flexible PV module stack, the ultra barrier film sits on the outward-facing surface above the encapsulant and solar cells, protecting them from moisture ingress — the principal cause of thin-film cell degradation — while allowing maximum sunlight through. Its extremely low WVTR makes it suitable for demanding outdoor PV installations where long-term moisture barrier performance is critical. The 510-F framed version is specifically engineered for compatibility with pressure-sensitive adhesive edge seal systems used in thin-film module assembly. This film is also used by solar panel manufacturers developing building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and portable or flexible solar products where lightweight construction is a requirement. 3M introduced the Ultra Barrier Solar Film line in the mid-2000s to early 2010s as demand for flexible PV module technology grew, and this material — date-coded 2015/2016 — dates from that active period of flexible solar manufacturing development.
