UDT S380 Dual Channel Optometer IEEE 488 GPIB Benchtop Optical Power Meter

The UDT Instruments S380 is a benchtop dual-channel optometer designed to measure optical power from two photodetector inputs simultaneously. It accepts photodetector probes on its two front-panel BNC inputs (Channel 1 and Channel 2), processes the photocurrent, and displays results on a front-mounted LCD. A plug-in calibration EPROM on the rear panel stores the wavelength-specific calibration data for connected detectors, allowing the instrument to be recalibrated or reconfigured by swapping the EPROM module.

Applications

The UDT S380 is a general-purpose optical power meter used in laboratory and production environments for measuring light intensity from photodiodes, photodetectors, and similar sensors. Instruments of this type are standard tools in optics labs, laser characterization setups, fiber optic test benches, photonics research, and radiometric calibration work. The dual-channel design allows simultaneous measurement of two detector inputs — useful for beam-splitting experiments, reference/signal comparisons, and differential power measurements. The IEEE 488 GPIB interface makes it compatible with automated test systems and GPIB-based instrument control software running on workstations and PCs from the same era. UDT Instruments (later part of Gamma Scientific) was a well-regarded U.S. manufacturer of optical detectors and radiometric instruments, and the S380 was a capable mid-range optometer suited to both research and production-line optical testing. The plug-in EPROM calibration system allowed labs to maintain separate calibrated detector/EPROM sets for different wavelengths or applications.

Condition: Used
This UDT Instruments S380 Dual Channel Optometer has been inspected and appears to be in good overall condition. The front panel controls and LCD display are intact, and the chassis shows the normal light wear expected on used bench instruments. Note that the Channel 2 front-panel connector surround shows visible discoloration and tarnishing — please review the photos for a clear view of this area. The plug-in calibration EPROM is present in the rear panel socket. The last recorded calibration was November 2000; buyers intending to use this instrument for calibrated measurements should plan to have it recalibrated.
