Applications
Frame Relay Access Devices (FRADs) like the Sync D-FRAP were widely deployed in the 1990s and early 2000s as the customer-premises interface for connecting LANs and serial DTE equipment to carrier-provided frame relay WAN services. Frame relay was the dominant packet-switched WAN technology of that era, offering more efficient bandwidth use than leased lines for enterprise branch connectivity. The D-FRAP specifically targets 56/64 Kbps DDS circuits — the standard low-speed digital local loop used by telcos for data services before broadband. Typical applications included connecting small branch offices to a corporate frame relay network, linking point-of-sale systems, or providing WAN access for legacy serial devices. While frame relay has been largely superseded by MPLS and broadband services, FRADs like this remain relevant for maintaining legacy WAN infrastructure, museum/archive systems, and test lab environments that simulate or test frame relay networks.
This Sync D-FRAP WAN Frame Relay Access Probe (Rev B, dated 04/19/1999) does not come with a power supply. Without the required 5V 2.0A external power supply, we were not able to power or test the unit, so it is being sold as-is. The enclosure shows light surface wear consistent with normal use. The front-panel LCD display, keypad, and status LEDs appear intact and undamaged. Rear ports — the DB-25 DTE port, COMM RJ-45, and NET RJ-45 — all look clean and free of visible damage.
