Description
RJD Controls Model 10 Domain Aligner & Power Supply 588638 Applied Magnetics Lab
The RJD Controls Model 10 is a benchtop magnetic domain alignment system consisting of a dedicated power supply unit and a companion domain aligner head. The power supply generates controlled DC current through a coil in the aligner fixture, allowing the operator to apply a precisely metered magnetic field to a sample in the forward or reverse flux direction. Front-panel analog meters display coil voltage (0–50 VDC) and coil current (0–4 A) in real time, and the aligner head includes indicator LEDs for Power, Device Ready, Coil Over Temperature, and Flux Forward/Reverse status. This unit came out of a working laboratory at Applied Magnetics.

Applications
Magnetic domain aligners are used in magnetics research and magnetic media manufacturing to apply a controlled, uniform magnetic field to a material sample in order to align its magnetic domains in a specific direction. This process is fundamental in the development and testing of magnetic recording media (such as hard disk platters, magnetic tape, and floppy disk substrates), permanent magnets, and magneto-optical materials. The forward/reverse flux capability allows researchers to cycle a sample through opposing field directions, which is useful for hysteresis characterization and demagnetization studies. Equipment of this type was widely used in industrial magnetics labs and R&D facilities from the 1980s through the 2000s — notably at companies like Applied Magnetics, which was a major U.S. manufacturer of magnetic recording heads and media components based in Santa Barbara, California. Domain aligners remain relevant today in academic magnetics research, magnetic sensor development, and legacy magnetic media production environments.
This RJD Controls Model 10 Domain Aligner and Power Supply (588638) has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. It was pulled from a working laboratory environment at Applied Magnetics, where it was in active use. The power supply housing shows minor surface scuffs consistent with lab use; the front-panel analog meters for coil voltage and coil current are intact and the scales are legible. The aligner head and coil fixture appear complete and undamaged. Cables are attached as shown in the photos. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
