Description

Quality Transformer Electronics Varian MED 4950 Klystron Transformer Inductor

This is a multi-tap transformer or inductor (model 4950, part number 01005164) manufactured by Quality Transformer and Electronics to Varian M.E.D. specifications. It was pulled from a Varian high-voltage klystron power supply. The component features a toroidal winding on a laminated E-I core housed in a painted steel frame with four mounting feet. Seven numbered leads exit the winding — leads 6 and 7 serve as the primary (input) winding, and leads 1 through 5 form a tapped secondary with lead 5 as common, providing multiple output voltage levels from a single winding.

Applications

Klystron power supplies are high-voltage, high-current systems used to power klystron vacuum tubes — microwave amplifier and oscillator tubes found in radar transmitters, particle accelerator RF drivers, satellite uplink stations, and industrial microwave heating systems. Varian Associates (later Varian Medical Systems) was one of the primary manufacturers of klystrons and the specialized power supplies designed to drive them, which typically require multiple precisely regulated DC voltages for the cathode, heater, focusing coil, and beam voltage circuits. A tapped transformer or inductor of this type serves as a key passive component in the power conversion and filtering stages of such a supply, providing isolated, stepped voltage levels from a single magnetic element. This particular unit dates from 1991 (date code 91-27) and is suited for use as a replacement or repair part in Varian klystron power supplies or other high-power RF/microwave transmitter power systems requiring comparable multi-tap magnetics.

Condition: Used
This Quality Transformer and Electronics Varian MED 4950 klystron transformer/inductor was pulled from a Varian high-voltage klystron power supply. We applied 10.6 VAC to leads 6 and 7 and measured the following outputs with lead 5 as common: leads 1–5: 8.97 VAC, leads 2–5: 43.2 VAC, leads 3–5: 20.6 VAC, and leads 4–5: 10.00 VAC. No further testing beyond these voltage measurements has been performed. The unit shows normal used wear — the painted surfaces have minor scuffs and the spade terminals show solder residue consistent with prior installation.
