Applications
CompactPCI (cPCI) is a Eurocard-based bus standard derived from PCI, widely adopted in the late 1990s and 2000s for carrier-grade telecom, defense, and industrial computing platforms where hot-swap capability and high mechanical reliability are required. The PT-CPC3400 slots into a cPCI chassis to provide an integrated 24-port 10/100 Ethernet switching fabric, distributing network traffic across blades and modules within the same shelf via the J1–J5 backplane connectors rather than requiring external cabling. Performance Technologies (acquired by Continuous Computing and later by Radisys) was a well-known supplier of CompactPCI networking and signaling boards used in telecom infrastructure equipment, including ATCA and cPCI-based media gateways, voice-over-IP platforms, and wireless base station controllers. This type of embedded switch card is still used in legacy telecom and defense systems that continue to operate on CompactPCI chassis infrastructure, as well as by integrators maintaining or refurbishing such platforms.
