Applications
The Microsoft 92658 was designed for everyday use on desktop computers during the PS/2 era, when this connector type was the standard input device interface on most IBM-compatible systems. The scroll wheel added convenience for navigating long documents and web pages, a significant improvement over earlier two-button mice. While PS/2 has largely been superseded by USB, many legacy computers, industrial control systems, and retro computing enthusiasts still use PS/2 peripherals, making this mouse valuable for system restoration, maintenance, and operation of older hardware. The sturdy design and simple, proven mechanics make Microsoft mice from this generation reliable peripherals for systems that require native PS/2 input.
