Applications
The PowerEdge 2850 was Dell's flagship 2U server for the mid-2000s, widely deployed in enterprise data centers, small business server rooms, and university IT environments. It was designed for roles such as file and print serving, database hosting, web serving, and virtualization under VMware ESX or Windows Server 2003/2008. The hot-swap SCSI backplane and hardware RAID controller made it well suited for environments requiring storage redundancy and uptime. Today these systems are commonly used for legacy application support, lab and test environments, low-volume virtualization hosts, and network-attached storage builds, where the mature SCSI storage platform and dual power supplies remain practical advantages. The 2850 generation represented a transition point for Dell between single-core and dual-core Xeon architectures, and units from this era are well documented with extensive community support for drivers, firmware, and configuration.
This Dell PowerEdge 2850 2U Rackmount Server has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. All six SCSI hard drives are installed in their hot-swap trays. The chassis shows normal wear consistent with data center use — light scuffing on the top cover and front bezel.
