Applications
The Cisco Catalyst 1900 Series was designed for small-to-medium wiring-closet deployments, providing shared and switched 10Base-T connectivity with Fast Ethernet uplinks to a distribution or core layer switch. Introduced in the mid-to-late 1990s, the 1900 Series was one of Cisco's entry-level managed switches targeted at organizations moving from shared Ethernet hubs to a switched architecture. The EN model adds the Enterprise Edition feature set, enabling additional management capabilities including Cisco's proprietary CMS (Cluster Management Suite) web interface and extended VLAN support. The two 100Base-X uplinks allow connection to a Fast Ethernet backbone while the 10Base-T ports serve end stations — a classic access-layer design of that era. These switches are still sought after for legacy network labs, Cisco CCNA study environments, and small office networks running period-appropriate infrastructure.
