Applications
HSSI (High-Speed Serial Interface) is a serial WAN interface standard developed in the early 1990s by Cisco and T3plus Networking to support data rates up to 52 Mbps over short distances — primarily used to connect routers to T3, E3, or ATM WAN equipment such as DSU/CSUs and multiplexers. The CAB-HSI1 is designed for use with Cisco routers that carry an HSSI port or HSSI WAN Interface Card (WIC), including platforms such as the Cisco 4000 series, 7000 series, and AGS+ routers, as well as router cards equipped with HSSI modules. Though HSSI has largely been superseded by interfaces such as Gigabit Ethernet and packet-over-SONET in modern networks, it remains in use in legacy telecom and enterprise WAN environments where older Cisco infrastructure is still maintained or being decommissioned.
