Description
Bio-Rad VersaDoc 5000 MP Peltier-Cooled CCD Chemiluminescent Imager w/ Software
The Bio-Rad VersaDoc 5000 MP is a digital gel documentation and molecular imaging system built around a blue-enhanced, Peltier-cooled CCD camera. It is designed to capture chemiluminescent, fluorescent, and colorimetric signals from electrophoresis gels, blots, and other biological samples, replacing film-based imaging with a fully digital workflow. The camera is supercooled to approximately -35°C to reduce dark current and maximize sensitivity on faint signals.

Applications
The VersaDoc 5000 MP is used in molecular biology and life-science research laboratories for gel documentation, western blot imaging, Southern/Northern blot analysis, and ethidium bromide or SYBR-stained gel visualization. CCD-based imaging systems like this replaced photographic film in these applications during the late 1990s and early 2000s, offering quantitative digital data capture, faster workflows, and a far wider dynamic range than film. The 5000 MP model sits at the high-sensitivity end of the VersaDoc product family, with its deeply cooled CCD making it particularly suited to low-signal applications such as chemiluminescent western blots where signal intensity is low and exposure time is critical. Bio-Rad's Quantity One software — included here — provides image acquisition, band quantification, lane analysis, and molecular weight estimation tools in a single package. These systems remain in use in academic, pharmaceutical, and biotech research settings wherever legacy gel documentation workflows are maintained, and are also sought as cost-effective alternatives to newer systems for routine gel documentation work.
This Bio-Rad VersaDoc 5000 MP chemiluminescent imaging system has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working laboratory environment where it was previously in use. The cabinet exterior is in good cosmetic condition with normal lab wear. The interior imaging chamber and pull-out drawer show some residue/staining on the imaging tray, which is typical for used gel documentation equipment. The left side panel has a cardboard cover over part of the ventilation area, which is visible in the photos — buyers should inspect the photos closely for this detail. The Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D lens is present and mounted on the camera assembly inside the chamber. Included with the system are Bio-Rad Quantity One software, the Discovery Series software binder, and associated cables. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
