Description

9-Track Magnetic Tape Reel 1200ft 1/2" Renaissance Media Recovery Inc

This is a used 9-track, 1/2-inch magnetic tape reel with 1200 feet of tape, made by Media Recovery Inc. under the Renaissance brand. The reel is housed in a clear hard-plastic reel case with a black AmberSeal latch clip. 9-track tape reels were the dominant magnetic tape format for mainframe and minicomputer data storage from the 1960s through the 1990s, widely used on IBM System/360, System/370, and compatible tape drives, as well as on DEC, Unisys, and other mainframe-class systems.

Specifications & What's Included

  • Format: 9-Track open reel magnetic tape
  • Tape width: 1/2" (0.5 inch)
  • Tape length: 1200 feet
  • Brand: Media Recovery Inc. – Renaissance series
  • Case: Clear hard-plastic reel case with black AmberSeal latch clip
  • Reel diameter: 10.5" (standard full-size mainframe reel)

Applications

9-track, 1/2-inch tape reels are the standard media for open-reel magnetic tape drives used on IBM mainframes (System/360, System/370, System/390) and compatible equipment from DEC, Unisys, Hewlett-Packard, and others. They support recording densities of 800 BPI (NRZI), 1600 BPI (PE), and 6250 BPI (GCR), depending on the drive. These reels remain in use today for legacy data archival, data migration off aging mainframe systems, and in organizations that still operate or maintain older tape-based storage infrastructure. Media recovery and data migration specialists — the original purpose of the Renaissance/Media Recovery Inc. brand — commonly use reels like this to archive or transfer data from older systems. They are also sought by collectors and hobbyists maintaining vintage mainframe hardware.
