Applications
The Zilog Z80 is one of the most widely used 8-bit microprocessors ever produced, introduced by Zilog in 1976 and subsequently manufactured under license by SGS-Thomson, NEC, Sharp, and other foundries through the 1980s and into the 1990s. It was the central processor in a broad range of personal computers — including the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, TRS-80, MSX platform, and the CP/M ecosystem of business machines — as well as countless embedded control, industrial, and consumer electronics designs. The Z80 also powered a large number of arcade game PCBs and electronic musical instruments of the era. The B-grade (Z80B) variant runs at 6 MHz, offering a modest speed increase over the standard 4 MHz Z80A, and was popular in later S-100 bus and CP/M systems seeking improved throughput. The Z80 remains in production today in CMOS form and continues to see active use in embedded applications, hobbyist retrocomputing, and legacy industrial equipment that cannot easily be re-architected to a modern processor. This SGS-Thomson-made chip is a period-correct replacement for any Z80B socket in vintage computer, arcade, or industrial control hardware.
This Zilog Z80BCPU (Z8400BB1) CPU chip has been visually inspected and appears to be in good used condition. The chip body is intact, and the 40-pin DIP leads appear straight and undamaged. The lot photo shows multiple chips stored in an anti-static tray, and a close-up reveals clear SGS-Thomson (ST) markings with date code 28932 on one representative chip; a second chip shows label 3100 on the reverse. Price is for one (1) chip. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions. Please note: We have multiple units in stock — yours may not be the one shown in the photos, however, it will be similar in condition and function.
