Applications
External 2400 baud modems like the ZM-2401 were standard serial-port peripherals for IBM PC-compatible and Zenith Data Systems computers throughout the mid-1980s and early 1990s. They connected to bulletin board systems (BBS), online services such as CompuServe and GEnie, and early internet dial-up services. The RS-232 DB25 interface made these modems broadly compatible with virtually any PC of the era running terminal software such as ProComm, Telix, or HyperTerminal. Zenith Data Systems was a major supplier of ruggedized and standard computers to the U.S. military and government agencies during this period, and surplus ZM-2401 units frequently trace back to those contracts. Today, these modems are collected as examples of early personal computing hardware and are of interest to vintage computing enthusiasts, computer history collectors, and anyone maintaining legacy serial communication setups.
This Zenith Data Systems ZM-2401 External 2400 Baud Modem has been powered on and tested at our facility. The unit powers on. It was sourced from military surplus. No AC adapter is included — you will need a 9.5V AC power supply to operate it. The unit shows light cosmetic wear consistent with age, including minor yellowing of the plastic casing typical of vintage equipment from this era. All visible connectors appear intact. Please note: We have multiple units in stock — yours may not be the one shown in the photos, however, it will be similar in condition and function.
