Applications

The WD Caviar AC310100 is a late-1990s desktop hard drive designed for IBM-compatible PCs of the Pentium II/III era, when 10 GB represented a large desktop drive. The EIDE (Enhanced IDE) interface — also called PATA — was the dominant hard drive connection standard from the early 1990s through the mid-2000s, used in virtually every consumer and business desktop PC before SATA took over. Drives like this are still sought today for restoring and maintaining period-correct vintage PCs, running legacy operating systems such as Windows 95/98/ME or early Windows NT/2000 that have compatibility issues with larger modern drives, and powering retro computing projects. The 40-pin IDE interface and standard 3.5-inch form factor make it a direct drop-in replacement for any system from roughly 1995–2003 that originally shipped with a similar-capacity IDE drive.
