Description

Waters Associates 710A WISP Automatic Sample Injector Liquid Chromatography HPLC

The Waters Associates 710A WISP (Waters Intelligent Sample Processor) is a benchtop automatic sample injection system designed specifically for the automated introduction of liquid samples into liquid chromatographic (HPLC) systems. It controls injection volume, sample sequence, run time, equilibration delay, and number of injections from its front-panel LED display and keypad, allowing unattended multi-sample HPLC runs. The 710A accepts samples via a motorized carousel-style tray visible through its front window.

Applications

The Waters 710A WISP was a flagship autosampler from Waters Associates, introduced in the late 1970s and widely adopted through the 1980s in analytical chemistry laboratories. It is designed to interface directly with HPLC systems — including Waters' own HPLC pump and detector modules — to automate the sample injection step, eliminating the need for manual syringe injections between runs. The 710A can queue and inject a programmed sequence of samples from its carousel tray, making it well suited for high-throughput analytical workflows such as pharmaceutical quality control, environmental sample analysis, food and beverage testing, and biochemical research. Waters Associates (now Waters Corporation) notes on the rear label that the device may be used for in vitro diagnostic applications. Labs maintaining legacy Waters HPLC systems or researchers seeking a proven, programmable autosampler for compatible chromatography setups continue to source the 710A WISP as a cost-effective instrument.
