Applications
The US Robotics Sportster series was one of the most widely used lines of external dial-up modems of the mid-to-late 1990s, a period when analog POTS (plain old telephone service) connections were the standard means of internet and bulletin board system (BBS) access for home and small-office users. The Sportster Voice variant added integrated voice mail functionality, allowing the modem to serve as a combined fax, data, and answering-machine device on a single phone line — a common arrangement before broadband and dedicated VoIP systems became standard. These units connected to DOS and Windows PCs via a DB25 or DB9 serial port and were compatible with standard AT command sets, making them broadly usable with dial-up internet software, fax applications, and communications suites of the era. Today they are primarily sought by vintage computing enthusiasts, retro BBS operators, and collectors of late-1990s PC hardware.
