Applications

This drive dates from the mid-to-late 1990s era of ATA IDE storage, when 2–4GB drives were standard in desktop PCs running Windows 95, Windows 98, and DOS-based systems. IDE hard drives of this type were the dominant storage medium in consumer and business desktops throughout that period, connecting via the 40-pin flat ribbon cable to the motherboard's IDE controller. Today, drives like this are used primarily for restoring, maintaining, and running period-correct vintage PCs — including systems built around Socket 7, Socket 5, and early Pentium/486 platforms — where modern SATA drives are not compatible. The 2.1GB capacity also falls within the 2.1GB BIOS addressing limit present on many older motherboards that cannot recognize larger drives, making this a practical replacement for legacy systems with that restriction.
