Applications

PCMCIA memory expansion cards of this type were the standard method for adding RAM to early-1990s laptop computers, including the Toshiba T4600 series. Before the widespread adoption of standard SO-DIMM sockets in laptops, many portable computers relied on proprietary PC Card slots for memory upgrades. The Toshiba T4600, released in the early 1990s, was a 486-class laptop running MS-DOS and early Windows, and additional RAM was necessary for running memory-intensive applications of that era. Cards like the SMT0446S were produced by third-party memory specialists such as SMART Modular Technologies and sold as compatible alternatives to Toshiba's own OEM modules (PA2012U). Today these cards are primarily sought by collectors and technicians maintaining vintage Toshiba laptops.
