Description
Tektronix Type 1L30 Spectrum Analyzer Plug-In 25 MHz-10.5 GHz Oscilloscope
The Tektronix Type 1L30 is a spectrum analyzer plug-in unit covering a frequency range of 25 MHz to 10.5 GHz. It is designed to plug into Tektronix 560-series oscilloscope mainframes, converting the host mainframe into a swept-frequency spectrum analyzer. The front panel provides a full complement of RF measurement controls including IF center frequency tuning, stepped IF attenuation, dispersion range selection, and a phase lock section with internal and external reference inputs.

Applications
The Type 1L30 is a mid-1960s Tektronix plug-in from the era when Tektronix dominated the laboratory instrument market with its modular 560-series mainframe system. The 560-series allowed a single oscilloscope chassis — such as the 561A, 564, or 565 — to be reconfigured for a wide variety of measurements by swapping plug-in modules. The 1L30 extends that platform into microwave spectrum analysis, covering frequencies from 25 MHz up through 10.5 GHz, which made it useful for RF and microwave signal characterization work in defense electronics, communications research, and university laboratories. The phase lock section allows the analyzer to lock to a stable reference frequency for precise frequency measurements, a feature important for characterizing microwave oscillators and transmitters. Today these plug-ins are sought by vintage instrument collectors, Tektronix 560-series mainframe owners who want to restore full lab capability, and engineers working on legacy RF systems that require period-appropriate test equipment.
This Tektronix Type 1L30 Spectrum Analyzer Plug-In was pulled from a working test lab environment — a calibration label on the rear panel identifies it as previously used by TEST LAB CO. in Mountain View, CA. The unit has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The front panel controls, knobs, and BNC connectors all appear intact, with typical surface wear and patina on the aluminum chassis consistent with a vintage instrument of this age. The left side panel is removed in some photos to document the internal wiring and circuit boards, which appear complete and undisturbed.
