The Tektronix TM502A is a two-slot portable instrument mainframe from Tektronix's TM500 series, designed to house and power up to two TM500-compatible plug-in modules. It provides the regulated power rails and physical chassis that TM500-series plug-in instruments — oscilloscope amplifiers, multimeters, function generators, counter/timers, and similar modules — require to operate. The TM502A is the compact, portable variant in the TM500 mainframe family, intended for bench or field use without a fixed rack installation.

Applications
The Tektronix TM500 series was introduced in the early 1970s as a modular, interchangeable plug-in instrument platform. The concept let engineers and technicians build a customized test bench by combining a mainframe power supply with whichever plug-in modules suited the task — oscilloscope vertical amplifiers, DMMs, function generators, pulse generators, counter/timers, and more. The TM502A specifically is the lightweight two-slot portable mainframe, popular for field service, on-site troubleshooting, and compact bench setups where only one or two instruments are needed. The TM500 ecosystem remained widely used in electronics labs, universities, military and aerospace depots, and industrial maintenance shops through the 1980s and into the 1990s. Today, these mainframes continue to be sought by engineers maintaining legacy TM500 plug-in collections, vintage electronics enthusiasts, and calibration labs that still operate TM500-era instruments.
This Tektronix TM502A 2-slot portable plug-in mainframe has been power-on tested with a Tektronix plug-in module installed — it powers on and the indicator lights illuminate — but it has not been fully bench-tested beyond that. It is being offered in used condition with that limitation noted. The unit shown in our photos is the least complete example in our current stock; we may have units that include the carry handle.
