Description
Tektronix 7854 Waveform Processing Oscilloscope 400MHz IEEE-488 GPIB 7000 Series
The Tektronix 7854 is a waveform processing oscilloscope mainframe combining a 400 MHz analog measurement platform with onboard digital waveform storage and an IEEE-488 (GPIB) interface — a capability set that set it apart from conventional analog scopes of its era. It accepts the full range of Tektronix 7000-series plug-in modules, giving it broad flexibility in channel configuration and measurement type. Plug-in modules are not included.

Applications
The Tektronix 7854 was introduced in the early 1980s as Tektronix's first waveform processing oscilloscope — a mainframe that bridged the analog and digital measurement worlds. The 7000-series plug-in system was one of the most widely adopted modular oscilloscope architectures in professional electronics, allowing a single mainframe to be reconfigured for single-ended, differential, sampling, logic, or spectrum analysis measurements simply by swapping plug-ins. The onboard GPIB interface made the 7854 a natural fit for automated test systems (ATE), where it could be programmed and queried by an IEEE-488 controller — common in semiconductor, defense, aerospace, and calibration lab environments. Its waveform storage and processing capabilities, unusual for an analog-era scope, made it valuable for transient capture, waveform math, and comparative measurement work. The 7854 remains sought after today by calibration labs, vintage test equipment collectors, and engineers maintaining legacy ATE systems that require a GPIB-addressable oscilloscope with 7000-series plug-in compatibility.
This Tektronix 7854 Waveform Processing Oscilloscope came to us from a retiring electrical engineer who used it in his calibration and product development lab. We installed four plug-in modules, powered the unit on, and it passed all self-tests and appears to be in good working order. The mainframe shows the normal cosmetic wear you'd expect from a professional lab instrument of its age — some scuffing and light marks on the chassis exterior visible in the photos. The plug-in bays are empty (no plug-ins are included). Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
