Applications

The Tektronix Phaser 350 was aimed at workgroups and design professionals in the mid-1990s who needed network-connected, high-quality color output at a time when color laser printers were far more expensive and color inkjets produced inferior results. Solid-ink technology — which Tektronix pioneered under the Phaser brand — melts wax-based ink sticks and jets the molten ink directly onto the paper, yielding saturated, smooth color without banding artifacts common to inkjet. The Phaser 350's Ethernet connectivity (via the bundled Phaser Share card) made it well suited to shared office environments running TCP/IP, AppleTalk (EtherTalk), or Novell NetWare networks, and its PostScript Level 2 engine made it compatible with virtually all professional design and publishing workflows of the era. Tektronix later sold its Phaser printer line to Xerox, which continued producing solid-ink Phaser printers for years afterward. Today these printers are collected by enthusiasts of 1990s office technology and are occasionally sought for use with legacy PostScript-based workflows or Macintosh/PC systems of the same period.
