Applications
The LineLink 144e belongs to a generation of external serial modems produced in the early-to-mid 1990s specifically for the Macintosh platform. At that time, the Mac used a proprietary DB-25 serial port (rather than the RS-232 PC standard), and modem makers like Technology Concepts produced Mac-specific external units to match. These modems were used for dial-up internet access via early ISPs, bulletin board systems (BBS), fax transmission, and remote access — the primary means of online connectivity before broadband became common. The 14.4 Kbps V.32bis standard this modem represents was the mainstream dial-up speed of the early 1990s before V.34 (28.8 Kbps) superseded it around 1994–1995. Today these units are collected by vintage Mac enthusiasts and retro-computing hobbyists running period-correct Macintosh setups, or used in demonstration/restoration contexts where original dial-up connectivity is desired.
This Technology Concepts LineLink 144e external Mac modem has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. The white plastic enclosure shows light shelf wear typical of older equipment, with no cracks or significant cosmetic damage visible. The rear panel connectors — DB-25 serial port and both RJ-11 jacks — appear clean and intact. The unit has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use.
