Applications

The Sun Type 5 mouse was the standard pointing device shipped with Sun Microsystems SPARC workstations and servers running SunOS and Solaris throughout the early 1990s. It used a reflective optical sensor that worked with a special metallic mouse pad grid — unlike later LED/laser optical mice, it required the Sun-pattern mouse pad to track. The Type 5 is compatible with Sun systems including the SPARCstation 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, IPX, ELC, and other workstations of that era that use the Sun serial mouse protocol over the DIN interface.
