Description
Sun Microsystems 3701415-02 Exabyte EXB-8500 8mm SE SCSI Tape Drive F/H Desktop
The Sun Microsystems 3701415-02 is a full-height external desktop tape drive enclosure housing an Exabyte EXB-8500 8mm tape drive mechanism. It connects to a host system via single-ended (SE) SCSI through dual DB50 50-pin connectors on the rear panel, allowing daisy-chaining with other SCSI devices. The enclosure accepts universal AC input, making it compatible with both North American and international power supplies.

Applications
The Exabyte EXB-8500 is an 8mm helical-scan tape drive based on the same 8mm videocassette technology that Exabyte pioneered in the late 1980s and commercialized through the 1990s. In this Sun Microsystems OEM configuration, the drive was used primarily with Sun SPARC workstations and servers — including the SPARCstation, Ultra, and SPARCserver lines — for data backup, archival storage, and offline data transfer. The 8mm format offered relatively high capacity for its era and became a common backup medium in Unix and scientific computing environments through the mid-1990s. The SE SCSI interface connects via the same 50-pin bus used across Sun's storage ecosystem, and the dual rear connectors allow the drive to be added to an existing SCSI chain without requiring a separate terminator block on most configurations. Today these drives are sought by administrators maintaining legacy Sun systems and by collectors of 1990s Unix-era storage hardware.
This Sun Microsystems 3701415-02 external 8mm SE SCSI tape drive (Exabyte EXB-8500 mechanism) has been visually inspected and is in good used condition. The cream beige enclosure shows minor surface scuffs and handling marks typical of used equipment, and the dark blue drive bay face appears intact. The rear SCSI connectors and IEC power inlet look clean with no obvious damage. This unit has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use.
