Applications
The SPARCstation 20 was Sun Microsystems' high-end desktop workstation of the mid-1990s, introduced in 1994, and represents the pinnacle of the pizza-box SPARC workstation line. It was designed to run SunOS 4.1.x and Solaris 2.x, and was widely deployed in engineering, scientific computing, CAD/CAM, software development, and university research environments. The SBus architecture allowed the system to be expanded with a range of interface and I/O cards — including GPIB, MXIbus, framebuffers, and additional SCSI controllers — making it popular in laboratory automation and instrumentation setups. The installed National Instruments SBus card (161638-01B) is consistent with GPIB or MXI instrumentation bus connectivity, a common configuration in test and measurement labs running LabVIEW or similar NI software on Solaris. SPARCstation 20 systems remain sought after by Solaris/SunOS enthusiasts, vintage UNIX collectors, and organizations maintaining legacy instrumentation software that ran on this platform.
This Sun SPARCstation 20 (600-3324-03) SPARC desktop workstation has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. It has been visually inspected and photographed. The chassis shows minor surface scuffs and light wear on the top cover consistent with normal use, but overall the unit presents in good cosmetic shape. A National Instruments SBus card (161638-01B) is installed in one of the expansion slots. The CD-ROM drive and floppy drive are present. Cables, monitor, and keyboard are not included.
