Applications
The Exabyte EXB-8050XL was a widely used 8mm helical-scan tape drive in the Unix workstation and server market of the mid-to-late 1990s. Sun Microsystems bundled it as an external storage option for SPARCstation, Ultra, and Enterprise-class systems, and it was also broadly compatible with any SCSI-2 host running Unix, Linux, or legacy operating systems that supported the Exabyte 8mm format. The 8mm format — borrowed from Sony Video8 camcorder tape — offered substantially higher capacity than contemporary QIC or 4mm DAT drives of the era, making the EXB-8050 series a go-to choice for workstation backup, data archiving, and software distribution in engineering, scientific, and corporate IT environments of the 1990s. Today these drives see continued use in legacy data recovery and archival work, where organizations need to read back old 8mm tape archives that were written on Exabyte-compatible equipment.
This Sun 599-2035-02 Exabyte EXB-8050XL 8mm External SCSI Tape Drive has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. The unit has been visually inspected and photographed. The front panel, tape slot, and Sun logo badge are clean and intact with no significant damage noted. The rear panel shows the dual 50-pin SCSI connectors and IEC power inlet in good cosmetic condition. Some light surface wear typical of used equipment may be present.
