Description
Sun Microsystems SPARCstation IPX 47B Workstation SPARC Desktop Computer
The Sun Microsystems SPARCstation IPX is a compact SPARC-architecture desktop workstation from Sun's classic early-1990s lunchbox-form-factor line. Running on a 40 MHz SPARC processor, the IPX was designed for Unix-based scientific, engineering, and technical workstation use, and was one of the fastest desktop SPARCstations in its class at launch. It ran SunOS and later Solaris, and supported the full Sun workstation software ecosystem.

Applications
The SPARCstation IPX was introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1991 as a high-performance desktop workstation aimed at engineers, scientists, and software developers working in Unix environments. It was widely deployed in universities, research labs, government facilities, and engineering firms throughout the early-to-mid 1990s. The IPX ran SunOS and Solaris and supported Sun's OpenWindows and later CDE desktop environments. As part of Sun's lunchbox-form-factor family — which also included the SPARCstation 1, 1+, 2, and IPC — the IPX represented the high end of the compact desktop line. Today these machines are sought after by vintage Unix enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone maintaining legacy Sun-based software or simulation environments. The SPARCstation platform as a whole was instrumental in popularizing Unix workstations in technical computing during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the IPX in particular is recognized as a capable and historically significant machine from that era.
This Sun Microsystems SPARCstation IPX (Model 47B) desktop workstation has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The unit appears to be in good cosmetic condition overall — the beige housing shows typical light wear consistent with age and prior use. The front floppy drive bay, rear ports, and ventilation are all intact as seen in the photos. Please review all photos carefully and contact us with any questions before purchasing.
