Applications

The Sun Type 5 keyboard was introduced in the early 1990s as Sun Microsystems' standard input device for their SPARC-based workstation line, including the SPARCstation 1+, SPARCstation 2, SPARCstation 5, SPARCstation 10, and SPARCstation 20, as well as various Sun server platforms of the same era. The keyboard connects via the Mini-DIN 8-pin port found on Sun workstations of this generation and communicates using the proprietary Sun keyboard serial protocol. The Type 5 succeeded the earlier Type 4 and introduced a revised key layout that became the Sun standard through much of the 1990s. Today these keyboards are sought after by administrators maintaining legacy Sun/Solaris systems, collectors of Sun hardware, and hobbyists running OpenBSD, NetBSD, or Linux on vintage SPARC hardware.
