Applications

The Sun 3 series was Sun Microsystems' primary line of engineering workstations in the mid-to-late 1980s, bridging the gap between the original Sun 2 (68010-based) and the later SPARC-based Sun 4 systems. The Sun 3/110 was aimed at engineering, scientific, and software development workloads requiring a capable UNIX environment in a compact desktop form. These machines ran SunOS, a BSD UNIX derivative that laid the groundwork for Solaris, and were widely used in university computer science departments, research labs, defense contractors, and software development shops throughout the late 1980s and into the early 1990s. The VME bus expansion architecture gave the platform flexibility for I/O and accelerator cards. The high-resolution 1152×900 display and integrated Ethernet made the Sun 3 series stand out against contemporary workstations. Sun 3 machines were largely superseded by the SPARC-based Sun 4 series beginning in 1987–1988, and represent an important chapter in the history of open UNIX workstations. Today these systems are sought by vintage computer collectors and Sun/UNIX historians.

Condition: For Parts or Not Working
This Sun 3/110 Prisum workstation (Model 247, P/N 600-2157-01) does not power on and is being sold AS-IS for parts or repair. The original listing notes contained a direct conflict — one line stated it powers on and another stated the chassis does not power on — so out of caution we are listing it as non-functional. No further testing has been performed at our facility, and no functionality is guaranteed. The exterior is in typical used condition for a unit of this age (manufactured August 1988), with the standard yellowing common to cream-colored plastics from this era. Rear ports are all present and visible, including BNC Ethernet, keyboard, SCSI, serial ports A and B, and BNC video outputs. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
