Description
Spitznagel SPF 183 Encapsulated Power Transformer D 78609 2x115V 2x15V 9VA
The Spitznagel SPF 183 (part number D 78609) is a compact, fully encapsulated power transformer manufactured in Tuningen, Germany. It features a dual primary and dual secondary winding configuration, allowing flexible connection for 115V or 230V primary inputs and center-tapped or series/parallel secondary outputs. The orange epoxy encapsulation protects the windings from moisture, vibration, and contamination, making it well suited for panel mounting or PCB integration in electronic assemblies.

Applications
Small encapsulated power transformers like the Spitznagel SPF 183 are used in a wide range of low-power electronic equipment wherever a mains-isolated, regulated or unregulated low-voltage AC supply is needed. Common applications include signal processing circuits, control boards, audio preamplifiers, laboratory instruments, industrial control panels, and bench-built power supply projects. The dual-secondary 15V winding is commonly used with a full-wave bridge rectifier to produce a split ±15V DC supply — a standard rail for op-amp and analog signal-conditioning circuits. The dual primary design makes the transformer compatible with both 115V North American and 230V European mains by simply wiring the primaries in parallel or series, respectively. Encapsulated construction was standard practice for European transformer manufacturers from the 1970s onward for equipment intended to meet UL and VDE safety standards, and Spitznagel transformers from Tuningen were widely used in German-engineered industrial and laboratory equipment of that era. This style of compact, potted chassis transformer remains in everyday use in custom electronics builds, replacement/repair applications, and industrial control manufacturing.
This Spitznagel SPF 183 Encapsulated Power Transformer (D 78609) is new and unused. It may be out of its original manufacturer packaging, but the transformer itself shows no signs of use or wear. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
