The Spectra-Physics 2020-05 is a continuous-wave (CW) tunable dye laser head from the Series 2000 system, rated at 1.5W output. It generates a highly coherent, narrowband beam whose wavelength can be tuned across a broad spectral range — from the UV/visible to near-infrared — by selecting a dye and adjusting the internal wavelength selector. The 2020-05 is the dye laser head only and requires a compatible Spectra-Physics pump laser and external power supply/controller to operate as a complete system.

Applications
The Spectra-Physics Series 2000 CW dye laser system was a mainstay of research laboratories from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Tunable dye lasers of this type are used in high-resolution laser spectroscopy, atomic and molecular physics experiments, photochemistry, fluorescence studies, and optical pumping. The broad tuning range — from UV through near-infrared depending on the dye used — makes them especially valuable in applications where a fixed-wavelength laser cannot provide the precise wavelength needed. The 2020-05 was commonly used alongside Spectra-Physics argon-ion or Nd:YAG pump lasers. These instruments continue to be used in research and teaching labs today, and surplus units are sought by university physics departments, spectroscopy labs, and researchers maintaining legacy optical setups.
This Spectra-Physics 2020-05 Series 2000 tunable dye laser head has been pulled from a working research environment and is being sold as surplus. The housing is in good cosmetic shape with typical surface wear consistent with lab use. The front panel controls — including the wavelength selector dial, shutter, coarse/fine/vertical/horizontal tuning knobs, and power switch — are all present and appear intact. Corrugated cooling hoses and the black connector/junction block are included. One gray accessory cable included with the unit has damaged insulation with the inner conductors frayed and exposed at one end — please see photos for detail. The brass coolant fitting on the connector block shows green oxidation inside the bore. The unit has not been powered or tested at our facility; buyers should plan for appropriate inspection and testing before use.
