SCSI optical drives like this one were commonly paired with Sun SPARCstations, Silicon Graphics workstations, Apple Macintosh systems with SCSI buses, and SCSI-equipped PCs running DOS, Windows 3.x, early Windows 95, or UNIX variants. The 50-pin narrow SCSI interface was the dominant internal drive interface for workstation-class systems before IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drives took over the consumer market in the mid-1990s. Today these drives are used primarily for legacy system maintenance, vintage computer restoration, and retro computing projects where an original SCSI optical drive is required to match the host system's bus.
This Sony CDU561-25 2x SCSI Internal CD-ROM Drive has been inspected and is in good used condition. The top panel shows surface scuffing and some discoloration consistent with age and prior use, and there is a yellow laser warning sticker on the top. The rear panel connectors and jumper block appear intact. It was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in service. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility.
