Description

Sony BVH-2500 1-Inch Type C Broadcast VTR Videocorder SMPTE Reel-to-Reel

The Sony BVH-2500 is a professional 1-inch helical scan broadcast video tape recorder built to the SMPTE Type C format standard. It was developed as a successor to the BVH-2000 — Sony's widely adopted Type C VTR that set the benchmark for broadcast reel-to-reel video in the late 1970s and 1980s — and added capabilities for still-picture recording and playback on a per-frame or per-field basis, along with frame/field replacement of recorded still images. The unit is rated for 100-120V AC and can be converted to European (220-240V) input voltage.

Applications

The BVH-2500 was part of Sony's Type C broadcast VTR lineup, the professional 1-inch reel-to-reel format that became the dominant mastering and studio standard in broadcast television through the late 1970s and most of the 1980s. SMPTE Type C replaced the earlier quad (2-inch) format for many facilities and was the go-to choice for network broadcast, post-production mastering, and distribution duplication. The BVH-2500's frame-accurate still-frame and frame-replace capabilities made it well suited for applications beyond straight playback, including production of master tapes for video disc authoring, animation and computer graphics recording, slide-to-video duplication, and time-lapse or very slow-speed recording workflows. It was used in broadcast facilities, post-production houses, and professional video production environments worldwide. Today, BVH-2500 units are sought by archivists, broadcasters, and institutions needing to play back or transfer legacy 1-inch Type C tape archives, as working Type C machines are increasingly scarce.

Condition: Used
This Sony BVH-2500 1-inch SMPTE Type C broadcast VTR has been pulled from a working broadcast environment and is being offered in used condition. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility, though it came out of active service use. The unit shows the cosmetic wear you'd expect on professional broadcast gear of this era — the front panel, transport section, and chassis show general handling marks consistent with studio use. Both the unit and the tape reels are housed in road cases (two cases visible in photos), which show their own wear but are intact and functional for transport. The rear panel connectors — BNC video, XLR audio, D-sub remote, and multi-pin — all appear complete and undamaged. The unit is noted as convertible to European (220-240V) input voltage.
