Description

SMC 8013EPC ISA Ethernet Network Card AUI BNC 10Base2 10Base5 16-bit NIC

The SMC 8013EPC is a 16-bit ISA Ethernet network interface card from SMC's EtherCard PLUS series. It provides 10 Mbps Ethernet connectivity via two physical interfaces: a BNC connector for 10Base2 (Thin Ethernet / coax) networks and an AUI/DB15 port for 10Base5 (Thick Ethernet) or external transceivers. The card uses the full 16-bit ISA bus for improved throughput over 8-bit designs and was manufactured in the USA, per the label visible on the PCB.

Applications

The SMC 8013EPC was designed for IBM AT-compatible PCs of the late 1980s and early 1990s — 286, 386, and 486-class machines running DOS, Windows 3.x, Novell NetWare, or OS/2. At that time, ISA-bus NICs were the standard way to connect PCs to corporate local area networks, and the SMC EtherCard PLUS line was among the most widely deployed cards in business environments. The dual AUI/BNC interface gave network administrators flexibility to connect the card to either Thin Ethernet coax segments or to an external AUI transceiver for a variety of media, including Thick Ethernet, 10Base-T hubs via MAU adapters, or fiber. Today these cards are sought by vintage computer hobbyists, retrocomputing enthusiasts, and operators maintaining legacy systems that still rely on ISA-slot hardware — including older industrial PCs, CNC controllers, and embedded systems built around 486-era motherboards that have no modern PCIe or PCI slots.
