Applications

The Silicon Graphics Indigo2 was SGI's flagship deskside workstation of the mid-1990s, designed for demanding 3D graphics, scientific visualization, and engineering applications running the IRIX operating system (SGI's proprietary Unix). Indigo2 systems with High Impact graphics were used extensively in visual effects and film production (notably during the era when SGI workstations dominated Hollywood VFX pipelines), as well as in aerospace, automotive design, geophysical simulation, and academic research. The High Impact graphics option delivered hardware-accelerated OpenGL rendering at a level that made it among the most capable desktop graphics platforms of its generation. Today, Indigo2 systems are sought by SGI collectors, retro-computing enthusiasts, IRIX hobbyists, and anyone needing a period-correct workstation for legacy software or display. A unit that boots to the welcome screen — even without a hard drive — is a useful starting point for a restoration, as IRIX can be loaded over the network (BOOTP/TFTP) or from a SCSI drive added to the caddy bay.
