Applications
The SGI Octane was Silicon Graphics' high-end single- and dual-processor UNIX workstation, introduced in 1997 and targeting technical visualization, 3D animation, film and video production, scientific computing, and CAD/CAM. The IP30 designation refers to the Octane's processor and system board generation. The graphics subsystem in the Octane was a key selling point — SGI offered several graphics options (SI, SE, MXI, SSI, and ESSENCE) built around their CRIME/VICE graphics architecture, all using the XIO slot system and outputting via the 13W3 connector to SGI's own high-resolution monitors or to third-party displays via adapter.
