Description
Shore Instrument 54784-D Type D Durometer Hardness Tester ASTM D2240 w/ Case
The Shore Instrument 54784-D is a handheld Type D durometer designed to measure the hardness of hard rubber, rigid plastics, and thermoplastic elastomers in accordance with ASTM D2240. Made by Shore Instrument & Mfg. Co. of Jamaica, New York — the company that originally developed the Shore hardness scale — this dial-type instrument displays results on a 0–100 analog scale and is designed for quick, direct readings in the hand or at the work surface.

Applications
Shore Type D durometers are the standard instrument for hardness testing of hard materials — including hard rubber compounds, rigid and semi-rigid plastics, thermoplastic elastomers, and ebonite — where Type A durometers would peg at or near 100. The Type D indentor uses a sharper, truncated-cone tip and a higher spring force than Type A, allowing meaningful discrimination across harder material formulations. ASTM D2240 governs the test method and defines the standardized indentation procedure, spring force, and equipment requirements for both types. Shore durometers of this design have been in continuous use in rubber and plastics quality control, incoming inspection, and materials development since the mid-twentieth century. The instrument is applied directly to the flat surface of the test specimen by hand, and the reading is taken at a defined time after contact — making it well suited to production floor and lab use alike. These instruments are still in active use today in plastics and rubber manufacturing, materials testing labs, and research environments.
This Shore Instrument 54784-D Type D Durometer Hardness Tester is in used condition. It was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use and has been visually inspected. The blue anodized body shows age-related wear consistent with years of lab use. The original red leather carrying case is included and shows surface wear on the exterior. A calibration sticker on the dial face shows a calibration date of 9-18-87 with a due date of 11-18-87 — the calibration is long expired and recalibration will be required before use in a calibrated measurement program. The dial face and analog scale appear intact and legible. It has not been tested or calibrated at our facility. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
