Applications
The Shiva LanRover series was a line of remote access concentrators produced in the mid-to-late 1990s, designed to give dial-up users access to corporate Token Ring LANs. The LanRover/8T specifically targeted IBM-centric enterprise environments where Token Ring (IEEE 802.5) was the dominant LAN standard — common in large corporations, banks, and government installations running IBM AS/400, mainframe, or OS/2-based networks. Each of the eight serial ports could support an analog modem, ISDN adapter, or other serial WAN connection, allowing multiple remote users to connect simultaneously to the Token Ring segment. The device functions as a network access server (NAS), handling authentication and routing for inbound dial sessions. By the early 2000s, Token Ring infrastructure was largely displaced by Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, making the LanRover/8T a legacy platform today — it is sought after primarily by organizations maintaining older IBM Token Ring environments, collectors of 1990s-era networking gear, and labs needing to test or support legacy Token Ring installations.
This Shiva LanRover/8T Token Ring Access Router (P/N 871VSLRTNW4US8) is in good used condition. The chassis is clean overall with minor cosmetic wear consistent with normal rack use. The front panel LEDs are intact and the Shiva/LanRover/8T labeling is clear and legible. All eight rear DB-25 serial access ports appear undamaged, the Token Ring DB-9 connector is present, and the IEC AC power inlet and rocker switch are in good shape. The bottom label is fully intact and readable, showing model, part number, power ratings, and compliance marks. This unit was pulled from a working environment.
