Description

Semtech MP55C-3.3-2.8 Pentium P55C Processor VRM 2.8V Voltage Regulator Module

The Semtech MP55C-3.3-2.8 is a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) designed to power Intel Pentium P55C processors requiring a 2.xV core supply. It accepts a 3.3V input from the motherboard and steps it down to a regulated 2.8V output for the processor core. The module plugs directly into a dedicated VRM slot on compatible Socket 7 motherboards, providing the split-voltage supply that P55C (MMX) Pentium processors require.

Applications

Voltage Regulator Modules of this type were introduced in the mid-1990s to support the transition from single-voltage to dual-voltage x86 processors. The Intel Pentium P55C (commonly called the Pentium MMX) introduced a split-voltage design: the I/O circuitry ran at 3.3V while the processor core required a lower 2.8V supply — something most existing Socket 7 motherboards couldn't provide natively. VRM slots were added to Socket 7 boards specifically to accept plug-in modules like this one, allowing older or cost-optimized motherboards to support the newer P55C processors without a full redesign. This Semtech module fills that role, converting the board's 3.3V rail to the 2.8V the P55C core demands. It is relevant today for collectors and hobbyists restoring or maintaining late-1990s Socket 7 systems, as well as anyone keeping period-correct P55C-based machines operational.

Condition: Used
