Description

Seagate ST34501WC Cheetah 4.5GB 3.5" SCSI Hard Drive 80-Pin Ultra SCSI

The Seagate ST34501WC is a 3.5-inch, 4.5GB Ultra SCSI hard drive from Seagate's Cheetah product line. It uses an 80-pin SCA (Single Connector Attachment) interface, which combines power and data into a single connector for easy hot-swap installation in compatible server backplanes. This drive spins at 10,000 RPM, making it a high-performance storage option for its era.

Applications

The Seagate Cheetah ST34501WC belongs to Seagate's first generation of 10,000 RPM SCSI drives, introduced in the mid-to-late 1990s. At that speed, Cheetah drives were among the fastest hard drives available and were aimed squarely at enterprise servers and high-end UNIX workstations where I/O throughput mattered. The 80-pin SCA connector was the standard backplane interface used in rackmount servers from Sun Microsystems, HP, SGI, Compaq, and IBM during this period, allowing drives to be swapped without powering down the system. These drives are still sought after today for maintaining and restoring vintage Sun, SGI, and HP servers, as well as for collectors of late-1990s workstation hardware. The Ultra SCSI bus (also called Fast-20 SCSI) provided transfer rates up to 40 MB/s on a Wide (16-bit) channel, a significant step up from earlier Fast SCSI implementations.
