Applications

Ten-foot C-band satellite dishes were the standard for home and small commercial TVRO (television receive only) satellite systems from the late 1970s through the 1990s, before smaller Ku-band dishes became dominant. At 10 feet in diameter, these dishes provide excellent gain for receiving C-band satellite signals (3.7–4.2 GHz downlink), making them well suited for receiving free-to-air C-band broadcasts, rural broadband via satellite, amateur radio satellite work (AMSAT), radio astronomy, and educational or hobbyist use. They are also used by broadcast facilities and uplink stations needing reliable C-band reception. A 10-foot dish can also be fed and used with Ku-band feeds when properly equipped. Today, these large dishes remain in service at farms, ranches, remote properties, broadcast facilities, and among satellite hobbyists who want maximum signal gathering capability. The mechanical dish and mount are the long-lived components of a satellite system — the electronics can be replaced or upgraded while the reflector and mount continue to serve.
