Applications

The Samsung SW-240 belongs to a generation of IDE optical drives that were standard equipment in desktop PCs built from roughly the late 1990s through the mid-2000s, when the IDE/ATAPI interface was the dominant standard for internal optical and hard drives before SATA took over. Drives like this were used daily for burning music CDs, backing up data to CD-R or CD-RW discs, and installing software from disc. Today they remain in demand for maintaining legacy desktop systems — particularly older towers with IDE controllers but no SATA support — as well as retro PC builds, vintage gaming rigs, and machines running period-correct operating systems such as Windows 98, 2000, XP, or early Linux distributions. The 40-pin IDE interface is directly compatible with any motherboard featuring an IDE/PATA controller, and the drive installs as a standard master or slave device using the rear jumper block.
